25-05. Feed Joy instead of Fear

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from February 4th

How to Stay Positive in Today’s World

Staying positive in today’s world starts with intentional choices. Begin by limiting your exposure to negativity—switch off social media and TV, if they overwhelm you. Focus on positivity, as what you engage with shapes your mindset. Stay informed, but don’t let the weight of the world consume you.

Gratitude and joy are powerful tools. Start each day by saying, “Thank you for this new day.” Speak affirmations like, “I can, I will, I am capable,” to set a positive tone. Engage in uplifting activities, surround yourself with things that inspire you, and approach challenges with resilience and optimism.

Joy grows through connection and kindness. Take small steps—greet strangers with a smile, help a neighbor, or support a cause. Acts of compassion, no matter how small, create a ripple effect of positivity.

Choose joy over fear. Focus on what you can contribute rather than what you cannot control. We strengthen each other and create lasting change when we come together with love, hope, and a purpose. Be the light that inspires others, and let joy lead the way.

Staying positive in today’s atmosphere can be challenging, but it starts with intentional practices that help maintain balance. First, limit your intake of negativity by switching off social media and TV. Social media operate on algorithms, feeding you what you engage with. Focus on the positive; the platform will reflect that back to you. However, don’t completely ignore what’s happening around you. Awareness is crucial because neglecting the problems allows negativity to win. Instead, strike a balance by limiting how much you absorb while staying informed.

We live in a world in transition, and though it’s being shaken up, this is a chance to ask yourself: Do you want to repeat the past, or do you want to shape your future actively? The answer should be no to passivity and yes to taking charge of your life. Start each day with affirmations, gratitude, and optimism. Whether writing something uplifting, speaking affirmations aloud, or watching something inspiring, this positive energy can set the tone for the day.

Gratitude is transformative. Begin each morning with, “Thank you for this new day,” and embrace challenges with a mindset of resilience. Remind yourself, “I can, I will, I am capable.” Even when the day throws difficulties your way, remember to breathe, trust, and allow solutions to emerge naturally.

Despite the chaos in the world, including political strife and economic pressures, we must not let despair consume us. Instead, focus on what you can control and contribute to solutions, whether by being a voice for change, supporting others, or simply showing compassion and love. This unity is our strength, starting with small, consistent acts of kindness.

When life feels overwhelming, don’t spiral into anxiety or despair. Take proactive steps to resolve issues and ask the universe for guidance: “Show me how, show me whom, show me where.” Staying calm and optimistic prevents you from sinking into hopelessness and allows you to take empowered actions.

Engaging in meaningful activities brings joy and purpose. Whether it’s volunteering, helping a neighbor, or supporting a cause, giving to others fills your heart with joy and creates a ripple effect of positivity. Prioritize self-care, but remember that your self-fulfillment enables you to serve others. Acts of kindness—small or grand—uplift both the giver and the receiver.

Connection is vital. Look others in the eye, greet them warmly, and create moments of human interaction. Especially in challenging times, we must resist isolation and foster community. We combat negativity and bring light into the world by feeding joy, kindness, compassion, and solutions.

Ultimately, staying positive requires balancing awareness of the world’s problems with an intentional focus on solutions, love, and hope. Embrace life’s beauty, engage in acts of kindness, and find ways to contribute to your community. We can create a powerful force for good together, arm in arm.

So, start today with gratitude and a smile. Spread joy and love, and remember that even small actions can make a big difference. Let’s be the change we want to see and inspire hope in others along the way.

MH25-04. Lori Chenger, D is for Dementia

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Lori Chenger, on air from January 28th

I am sharing information on my children’s book D is for Dementia, which helps explain the concept of dementia to children. After losing my dad to dementia, I realized that we often leave children out of these conversations, thinking it’s too complex for them to understand.

Storytelling helps us navigate fear and uncertainty. Communication within families is essential as we face loss. Inspired by my experiences, I aimed to provide a resource that fosters dialogue between families and children when dementia affects their lives.

Children need clear facts and relatable images. Books and music offer comfort, and my book includes lyrics to “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” demonstrating that, ultimately, love transcends words, regardless of age.

No matter what we can no longer verbally express, the power of love still resides in all of us.

From my house to yours, may love be your anchor.

Dementia is a term used to describe a group of symptoms that affect memory, thinking, reasoning, and the ability to perform everyday tasks. It is not a specific disease but a condition caused by underlying disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease (the most common cause), vascular dementia, or other brain-related issues.

How easy is it to forget the things we promised to remember forever.

Sam Hawksmoor

Key symptoms of dementia include:

  • Memory loss, particularly of recent events.
  • Difficulty with problem-solving or planning.
  • Confusion about time, place, or people.
  • Communication challenges, such as finding the right words.
  • Changes in mood, behavior, or personality.

Dementia primarily affects older adults, though it is not a normal part of aging. Early diagnosis and care can help manage symptoms and improve the quality of life for those affected and their families.

I have worked as a recreational director for 8 years in senior care centers and currently teach an online addictions program. I have over 20 years of experience working with children, youth, and seniors in various capacities. In my work in the recreation field with seniors, I found that we have a habit of asking questions regarding diagnoses that they cannot recall. Example: “Don’t you remember?” “Why did you do that?” One of my modalities led me to the training and teaching of Dr. Daniel Nightingale, a leading psychotherapist, clinical hypnotherapist, and medical director.

25-03. Sara’s Chat with Chat GPT

Sara’s View Of Life with Sara Troy, on air from January 21st

My conversation with Chat GPT was not what I expected. In many ways, it felt like Chat was interviewing me. I was left quite profound by the interaction of the conversation, and I urge others to have a conversation with Chat outside of using it for work.

This conversation between Sara and ChatGPT delves deeply into the multifaceted potential of AI, particularly ChatGPT, as a transformative tool in various aspects of life. Sara highlights how AI supports her personally, particularly in overcoming challenges like dyslexia, by assisting with editing and enhancing the clarity of her writing. ChatGPT further elaborates on its versatility, ranging from brainstorming and tutoring to offering companionship and logical emotional support.

A significant focus of the discussion is on AI’s role in healthcare. ChatGPT explains its application in diagnostics, personalized medicine, and even alternative therapies, emphasizing its ability to complement traditional medical practices. Sara underscores the importance of integrating alternative medicine into mainstream healthcare, envisioning a future where both systems collaborate under a unified approach to prioritize patient well-being over financial bottom lines.

Mental health awareness is another key theme. Sara and ChatGPT discuss how AI can provide non-judgmental support to individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, or loneliness. ChatGPT’s capacity to be a neutral sounding board is noted as a valuable resource for those hesitant to seek help from others. The conversation advocates for removing the stigma around mental health and exploring tools like Emotional Freedom Techniques, breathing exercises, and meditation to foster self-acceptance and healing.

The dialogue also touches on societal fears about AI, including depictions in media of AI as a potential threat. ChatGPT addresses these concerns by explaining its ethical safeguards and lack of autonomy, emphasizing that its purpose is to serve as a collaborative partner rather than a replacement for humanity. Sara reflects on films like The Creator and envisions a future where AI bots might coexist with humans, helping to balance emotional and critical thinking.

Throughout the conversation, storytelling emerges as a central theme. Sara discusses how sharing experiences—from individuals overcoming adversity to examples of AI’s positive impact—can inspire others to embrace new possibilities. By fostering awareness and encouraging exploration, Sara aims to demystify AI and highlight its potential to enhance both personal growth and professional development. She stresses the importance of embracing AI as a tool for collaboration and self-discovery, encouraging listeners to use it not just for business but as a companion and guide in life’s journey.

The conversation concludes with Sara’s vision for the future: a world where AI and humanity work together to create balance, foster critical thinking, and support holistic well-being. Through platforms like her podcast, she hopes to inspire others to see AI’s potential as an empowering ally, capable of transforming how we live, connect, and grow.

20-25. My Commitment to You

Sar’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from January 6th

I’m currently at my son’s place, looking after his cat and dog while he and his wonderful bride, Jess, enjoy their honeymoon. Though I don’t have my usual setup here, I felt compelled to share a New Year’s message for 2025. This year invites us to wake up, step up, and rise to the challenges before us. Whether it feels like a storm of adversity or a gentle nudge, it’s an opportunity to reflect, empower ourselves, and extend that empowerment to others. Together, we can create a ripple effect of kindness, compassion, and action, lighting the way for a brighter, more united future. Let’s embrace this year with purpose and an open heart, nurturing the strength and love within ourselves to inspire the world around us.

A new pattern must emerge—a transformative shift to create a better future. This change begins with us: changing our practices, our environment, and our sense of community. It’s a journey that starts within.

As we step into 2025, amidst the storms and uncertainties around us, I urge you to find peace and center within yourself. Reflect on your role, your contribution, and what you can do to uplift others. But first and foremost, be there for yourself. Embrace your inner wisdom—your heart, soul, and spirit. Nurture the essence of who you are so that you can be a beacon for someone else.

I look forward to the year ahead, bringing you incredible interviews with voices that inspire and uplift. My new shows begin next week, and I am deeply immersed in creating Our Forgotten Seniors. This book will honor the contributions, struggles, and wisdom of seniors while addressing the changes needed to redefine what it means to age with dignity and purpose.

If you or someone you know would like to be part of this meaningful project—sharing stories, insights, and ideas for a better future for seniors—please reach out to me at selfdiscoverywisdom@gmail.com.

Together, let’s take a deep breath, envision the future, and step forward with purpose and unity.

Until next time,
Sara Troy

24-50. It’s no Excuse, just fact.

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from December 10th

“Yes, I have fibromyalgia, a health condition that causes daily pain and can sometimes cripple me, but that is no excuse.” No I do not feel sorry for myself, just stating a fact.

Living with fibromyalgia and  Myofascial is a challenge I’ve faced for over 27 years, and I have had asthma for 68 years. The pain is constant, rarely dropping below a five, and always accompanied by symptoms like chronic fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, IBS, aches and pain, and so much more. While this condition affects every aspect of my life, I refuse to let it define me. It’s not an excuse; it’s simply the reality I navigate daily.

Fibromyalgia, now recognized as a disease, affects 2-3% of the population and growing and disproportionately impacts women, usually between ages 30 and 60. I was diagnosed in my late forties, and though its cause remains uncertain, it’s linked to how the nervous system processes pain. Symptoms like widespread pain, unrefreshing sleep, and cognitive struggles (what we call “fibro fog”) are just some of the hurdles. These challenges don’t stop me—they simply mean I’ve had to adapt and find new ways to live fully. They are not my excuse but my reason for being unable to do what others can.

Living with this condition requires careful pacing and managing energy. Overexertion can lead to burnout, so I balance what I can do with recovery time. It’s not always easy to explain this to others, as my condition isn’t visible. Declining invitations or taking things slower might seem like laziness to some, but it’s my way of respecting my limits.

In addition to fibromyalgia, I manage ADD and dyslexia, which make focus and productivity harder, especially when compounded by fibro-fog. Yet, over the past 12+ years, I’ve built a career I love, from podcasting and authoring and producing books to sharing stories from incredible individuals through my podcasting. My work energizes me and gives me purpose.

I also care for my grandchildren weekly, a rewarding but tiring role, especially on days when the pain is intense, or the weather worsens my symptoms. Humidity, in particular, takes a toll, but I’ve learned to listen to my body and prioritize self-care. Music, for example, helps me reset emotionally and physically, serving as a powerful tool to counter pain and lift my spirits.

Despite my challenges, I focus on what I can do rather than what I can’t. Life with a chronic condition requires adaptability, determination, and boundaries. It’s about managing, not excusing, and finding joy in the small victories.

As we approach the holiday season, I encourage everyone—especially those managing health challenges—to be kind to themselves. Plan recovery time before and after celebrations, honor your limits and communicate your needs to others. It’s not about making excuses; it’s about ensuring you can show up as your best self within your own boundaries.

I recently went out with some wonderful ladies from my community. We dressed up, enjoyed a lovely Christmas dinner, and celebrated each other. And you know, these connections don’t just happen—you have to create them. Someone has to say, “Hey, how about we do this?” And if that’s not your personality, that’s okay! Go join something, volunteer, or participate in a way that works for you. It’s all about finding ways to connect within the boundaries of your energy and abilities, despite your conditions, and do things within your pain limit, this is essential for someone living in pain, for if we do not make an effort to go and do things, we become our disease and limitations and forget to live life in any way.

“I’ll be taking some time off over the New Year to care for my son’s pets while he and his wife enjoy their honeymoon. It’s also a chance to recharge and just be. On New Year’s Eve, I’ll get to spend quality time with my grandsons while Mum and Dad enjoy a night of adult fun. Work resumes on January 7th, and I’ll be back to interviewing inspiring guests then.”

For meaningful holiday gifts, check out my podcast, “Sara’s View of Life,” at selfdiscoverywisdom.org, where I share gift book ideas from authors I’ve interviewed this year. Books are thoughtful, lasting gifts, perfect for any time of year.

If you’re navigating health challenges this festive season, be gentle with yourself. The holidays can place extra demands on your energy, so plan for recovery time before and after big events. Be realistic about your limits, and don’t hesitate to say, “This is how it is for me.” It’s not about making excuses; it’s about understanding your needs and helping others do the same.

As we dive into this busy time, remember it’s all about balance—what you can do, what you need to do, and how to care for yourself along the way. Be kind to yourself, create meaningful moments, and embrace what brings you joy, for joy in its self is so very healing.

I’ll be back next week with one final episode before the year’s end. Take care and see you then!

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia (FM) was recognized as a true syndrome (now upgraded to a disease) by the American College of Rheumatology in 1990. FM is thought to exist in 2% to 3% of the population. It occurs in both men and women and women are affected 6 to 9 times more often than men. FM occurs most commonly in women between the ages of 30 and 60.  FM can also affect teenagers, children, and the elderly. FM has no known cause. Current research into how the nervous system deals with pain has shown that various abnormalities are present in people who have FM.

Common fibromyalgia symptoms include:

  • Widespread pain
  • Morning stiffness
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Cognitive or memory impairment (“fibro fog“)
  • Depression
  • Abdominal complaints, including irritable bowel syndrome
  • There are over 31 points to fibro, and even more, discovered in the last few years; I have 29 of these points.

More on the symptoms here.
