MH23-06. Greg Hammer’s Resolution to Improve Mental Well Beingness

Mental Health Awareness with Sara Troy and her guest Greg Hammer MD, on air from February 7th

  • Why do you think the #1 resolution for 2023 is to improve mental health and well-being?
  • People are experiencing a prolonged period of chronic stress that’s unprecedented in their lifetimes.  The pandemic, global food shortages, climate uncertainty, and the war in Ukraine and ongoing threats of war all contribute to this stress.
  • Many people feel like they weren’t able to prioritize their mental health while focusing on their physical health during the pandemic.
  • Gen Z is driving the push towards prioritizing mental and emotional well-being.  They’re realizing that health is a holistic pursuit that includes the mind as well as the body.
  • What is it about winter that makes us feel more prone to anxiety, depression, and burnout?
  • Decreased sunlight lowers our vitamin D levels which can lower serotonin and can cause feelings of depression.
  • Staying indoors can also feel isolating, which can contribute to anxiety and depression.
  • “Winter Burnout” is the physical and emotional exhaustion that is caused by chronic stress over a prolonged period of time.  Over time, the above two issues and other stressors can contribute to feelings of burnout.
  • Many people struggle with feelings of anxiety, depression, and burnout during the winter.  What is the first thing that you would recommend they do?
  • Sleep, exercise, and nutrition form the tripod that supports our physical and emotional wellbeing. Chronic stress causes a deterioration in all of these, but improving even just one leg of this tripod can begin a new trend towards overall wellness.
  • Weather permitting, get outside to increase your vitamin D levels.  Even a short walk will help.
  • Winter is an especially difficult time for mental health so practice Nonjudgment to limit self-blame and be Intentional about finding 3 minutes a day to prioritize your well-being.
  • How does just 3 minutes a day improve negative thoughts and rewire our brain?
  • The key is daily practice over time.  When you start the day by focusing on the 4 pillars of GAIN, you’ll begin to recall them in daily life and in various situations.
  • For example, you might have a difficult commute and start to get upset with other drivers.  But then you’ll remember that you promised to Intentionally choose Nonjudgment and Accept those around you and your current circumstances.  You can even be Grateful that you have a place to go and are healthy enough to travel!
  • What are the 4 pillars of the GAIN Method and how is it used in a 3-minute meditation?
  • (Take a few deep, calming breaths before you begin)
  • G: Breathe in the Gratitude for the richness in our lives, our loved ones, and even simply being alive this day.
  • A: Accept the painful experiences we cannot change. Open our hearts and bring this pain closer and closer until we merge with it until there is no separation. We often find that the pain is less than we thought.
  • I: Use our Intention to re-wire our brains away from our negative bias and obsession with the past and future. Practice being present, which is where happiness lives.
  • N: Become more Nonjudgmental. The world around us does not have to be labeled as good or bad. This goes for the people around us and even ourselves. Dropping self-judgment is difficult, but we can learn to do this through daily practice with small, baby steps.

C23-06. Journalists Suswati Basu, knowledge is power.

Choose Positive Living with Sara Troy and her guest Suswati Basu, on air from February 7th

I believe that knowledge is power, whether, through books or research, we can all know ourselves a little better. Even though I have faced many adversities in both mental and physical health, I feel that we never stop growing as people. As a journalist, we face challenges on producing content that people will read with an open mind, and want to engage in conversation about the subjects.

Specialties: women in technology, DEI, gender, social model of disability, race, and social politics; British, Chinese, and Indian politics, mental health, eating disorders, nonfiction books.

Suswati Basu is a multilingual disabled intelligence journalist, former intelligence expert, mental health books show podcast host, and award-winning activist.

As a survivor and thriver from trauma, living with both mental health and physical disabilities, she began the International Women’s Podcast Award-nominated How To Be... Books show looking at helping mental wellbeing through reading and interviewing authors. Speaking to more than 50 authors in the past two years, including powerhouse people such as internationally renowned writer Seth Godin and veteran journalist Gary Younge, Suswati gained huge insight throughout the year and has been developing and creating a like-minded community. She actually reads a book a day! She is currently Head of Audience and Deputy Editor of NationalWorld news.

23-06. Resistance is futile in 2023 Actionism it.

Sara’s View of Life with Sara Troy, on air from February 7th

It is our human nature to fight back, we have a knee-jerk reaction to things and we like to be argumentative and be right. This, unfortunately, gets us nowhere, so why don’t we try a different approach in 2023?

We know we are still in this pandemic and all its variants; we know we are in transition in our personal lives, mental health, wellness, financial security, in industries, and in our global economics. So fighting against it is futile. This is the time to ask ourselves what we are going to do about it, what we have learned, and how we are going to seed opportunities for 2023.

Everything, even disasters have a reason, some times it is to change our direction, sometimes a lesson about ourselves we need to learn, but it is always about us having the ability to make the changes we need to move forward and not drag ourselves down by what has been.

2020, 2021, just survival, 2022, coming out of the fog, and all of it was a time of reflection, a time to review our lives and go into ourselves and feel what we want for our future. A time to step up and be counted in heart and kindness and help each other on this windy, rocky path. We have so much to be grateful for, but when in fear, doubt, and hysteria, we can not see the gifts before us.

2023 is a year of nurturing those seeds you planted, watering them, and allowing them to grow. It is a time to allow and open up to change and when you come from the heart space, your mind sees things differently and you feel more enriched by what is possible and what is growing within and around you.

This transformation of humanity still has about 2-3 more years to grow out off. If we come together and stop fighting each other, and start listening to the inner voice, we will see how we can make the changes and why we need to, for if we do not, this planet and the source of universal energy will change it for us and it will be a harder ride than even 2024.

So let us rise up to the occasion and be the change the world needs, be the strength and solution we need in our own lives. FOR IF NOT YOU, WHO? We can not wait for others to do it for us anymore; we must be proactive in our own lives and in our community in order to thrive and rise up to greater heights.

BE KIND, CARE, SHARE AND STEP UP TO A HIGHER VIBRATION.

YH23-06. David Hernandez, My Body by Purpose.

Your Health is Your Choice with Sara Troy and her guest Steven Logreira, on air from February 7th

After losing my childhood best friend (Eric) to obesity at the age of 21. I made a commitment, that I wanted to help people avoid them going through what my best friend went through. So, I began to reflect on the issues that kept my friend stuck in his unhealthy lifestyle. One issue that I believe is missing in the conversation of health is people’s relationships with food which is the leading cause of overeating. Emotional/stress eating is something that affects between 83-88% of Americans, and that number increases each year. A recent article released by CNBC revealed that 11 million people die each year due to non-communicable diseases caused by poor eating habits. For the past 15 years, I have been learning, perfecting, and implementing my strategies to create a practical system that helps men and women put an end to emotional/stress eating for good.
